The USS/USNS MARS final assignment
was
as a target ship for military operations
in the waters off Hawaii. She took quite
a pounding before finally giving up.

Mars was sunk on 15 July 2006 at
1622 hours in 2,750 fathoms of water,
54 miles from land.

Our ship's bell is now located in Mars, PA.

Ken Dively is our new Ship's Store Manager.  Knowing of his skills and back ground we are anticipating new things to come.

I am happy to report that our informal MARS REUNION organization is doing well. We are financially sound & I thank everyone for your support. We continue to locate former Mars crew members & have added over 100 new names in 2006. After all these years, we welcome you back aboard.

Sadly, we have lost more of our shipmates, some recently & others that I have just been informed about. Their names have been added to our MEMORIAL page on the Mars website.

Everett is looking for volunteers to help with the following :

Mars History Books:

We now have about 20 three-ring binders made up.  These books need to be kept up to date as new information is received.  It would be great if someone would take over this job as caretaker of these books.  I will mail the books to Pittsburgh and after that reunion is complete they will have to go to Oklahoma.  I have spent many hours over the past ten years up-dating these books.  These history books are an important part of our Mars Reunion Association and they play an important role at each reunion.  If you would like to help please email me and place in the subject line of your email Mars History Books.

Reunion Picture / Photo Books:

These picture/photo books are comprised of eight three ring binders.  A new binder is compliled after each reunion.  This is an intricate part of each and every reunion and is enjoyed by all who attend our reunions by easily connecting us to fellow shipmates through pictures.  I am still compiling the San Diego book and this does take time to input all the photos and pictures.   However when you consider that this will be your only responsibility and the fact that you will have 11 months to compile it, by taking a few hours a week, it brings this very important job down to size.   These books will be mailed to Pittsburgh and then to Oklahoma.  If you would like to help please email me and place in the subject line of your email Mars Picture/Photo Books.

Reunion Committee:

He is suggesting that this committee be made up with five good men, who are able to communicate with each other via the Internet, Cell Phones, etc.  However in writing this article, I am suggesting that we have eight men, two for each of the four time zones.  Is this too much to ask, of such large areas?

Keep in mind that we have locations in place for our reunions till the year 2011.  This committee would function in it's fullest capacity at that time but could give assistance to the reunions which are currently in place.

Responsibilities would be but not limited to:

  1. Maintaining the reunion funds.
  2. Finding a city for the reunions.
  3. Finding a hotel which meets our specific needs.
  4. Communicating to the Crew via, web site, newsletter, letters, and mailings.
  5. Registrations
  6. Entertainment
  7. Transportation
  8. Signs for hotel & buses.

If you would like to help with these much needed positions please email me {place in the subject line the position title} by clicking on my name.  Everett Jones

To further help Everett visit His Page and read how you can  help him with the crew listings.   send him an email with Mars Eighties Search in your subject line.

We have now located over 1182 former crew members.  To keep this number growing we need you {if you have not done so} to please fill out a feedback form with your current information.
