Received the following e-mail. If you can help Apryl please post your infomation here. Thanks Chuck Jones Message Board Moderator My father, Maynard Leon Nelson may have served on the USS Mars, it is one of the ships my mother remembers. My dad died in 1988 when I was 12 and I have almost no memories of him. Now I am 33 and I wish I knew about his life and his time in the Navy, the places he traveled, his memories, etc. I haven't many family members to tell me stories about him so I am looking for ship mates who may remember him.
My husband is in the Air Force and has suggested I try Navy personnel to find out which ships my father served on and which years, but so far I am just searching online with the ships names I know of (USS Halsey in 1977, the ship he was on when my brother was born, USS Acadia in the mid-80s, he one ship he was on that I remember, and the ones my mom suggested: USS Mars, USS Sierra and USS Charleston). I think my dad joined the Navy in 1965, I know he was on a ship during the Vietnam War, I know he went from Active Duty to Reserves in 1978 or 79, and he died in 1988. If you have any information about men who served on the USS Mars-I'm guessing perhaps my dad is the Maynard L Nelson listed on the memorial page here, http://www.ussmars.com/page/page/1833900.htm, but I am not sure, I don't know what MM3 means, but if that is my dad, he was on the Mars from 1967 to 69 and that fits, that would also likely be the ship he was on during the Vietnam War. Anyway, if you can guide me toward finding out any more information, or if, you knew him, please contact me. Thank you, Apryl (Nelson) McLean Send Apryl an email
